We Help Canadian Organizations Turn Complex Spatial Data Into Clear, Actionable Insights
Vivid Geographic Inc. provides GIS consulting, data management, and geospatial analysis services to professionals and organizations across British Columbia.
Kootenay Conservation Program
The Kootenay Conservation Program (KPC) is a partnership of over 85 organizations—including First Nations, stewardship groups, government agencies, and producers—working to conserve biodiversity and support healthy ecosystems across the East and West Kootenays.
-
During our work with the KPC, we’ve supported several distinct yet interconnected initiatives, including:
Kootenay Connect – Priority Places Project
We were brought on to manage the spatial data requirements for this multi-year project. Our role involved developing a comprehensive database, analyzing incoming data from diverse sources (independent biologists, ecologists, non-profits), and delivering both report-ready maps and mapping support for annual deliverables.
Kootenay Connectivity Working Group
In its fifth and final year, this collaborative initiative brings together the Ktunaxa Nation, Provincial Government, scientists, and KCP staff to conserve wildlife habitat and enhance ecological connectivity across jurisdictions. Focused on the Columbia Lake area within Ktunaxa ɁamakɁis, we provided GIS and technical support, working directly with Ktunaxa and ʔakisq̓nuk offices. Our custom web mapping application integrates complex datasets into an accessible tool for engagement, planning, and knowledge sharing.
KCP provides a coordination and collaboration role for private land securement in the Kootenay region. At Vivid Geographic Inc, we continue to support the biological evaluation of properties across the East and West Kootenays via a specialized GIS analysis, and in collaboration with local ecologists and biologists.
-
Database development and management - collation and management of several datasets from various sources including independent biologists, ecologists and non-profit organizations;
Analysis of data to support project deliverables and report map creation
Customized web map applications for delivering data and analysis to the various project stakeholders.
-
A streamlined and well-organized spatial data infrastructure supporting multiple KCP initiatives. Our work has enabled more efficient collaboration across organizations and improved access to high-quality maps and data to guide conservation decision-making.
Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK)
The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) serves the diverse communities of the Kootenays through regional planning, resource management, and public safety initiatives—including a growing focus on wildfire resiliency across the region.
-
In partnership with Cathro Consulting, we developed the Wildfire Resiliency Planning Tool (WRPT) — a comprehensive internal web mapping application designed to streamline wildfire planning and coordination across the region. The main purposes of the WRPT was to ensure that the Roundtable members have a holistic perspective to aid in strategic planning, offer connectivity, reduce redundancies and easily access information about past, current and potential projects.
-
Integrate a previously fragmented data and mapping system into one comprehensive and easy to use tool;
Collating existing data by “data mining” open sources and other proprietary data sources;
Developed a data catalogue of existing and proposed/future datasets;
Created a database platform to record past, present and future funding requests for fuel treatments in the RDCK;
Created a web-based mapping application with an “easy to use” interface with all relevant data in an “easy to understand” format.
-
The WRPT is now a vital tool in the RDCK’s wildfire planning efforts, enabling greater clarity, communication, and coordination among multiple jurisdictions and stakeholders. By bringing together key data in one intuitive platform, the RDCK and its partners are better equipped to identify high-risk areas, align resources, and implement effective mitigation strategies throughout the region.
Canadian Forage and Grassland Association
The Canadian Forage and Grassland Association is the national voice for Canada’s forage and grassland industry. The association supports producers and land managers across the country by advancing sustainable practices, strengthening the forage market, and promoting the critical role of grasslands in agricultural and environmental resilience.
-
We supported the CFGA in adapting and expanding the Habitat and Biodiversity Assessment Tool (HBAT)—an innovative, online resource originally developed in Alberta—into a broader national application. Our role included supporting the customization of the tool for use in multiple provinces through the Nature Fund Project and ensuring it could effectively support agricultural producers in integrating habitat stewardship into their land management practices.
-
Data collection and collation
Analysis
Custom outputs and deliverables
Final reporting and process development documentation for future updating.
-
The HBAT is now a practical, accessible tool for producers to explore the habitat potential of their land and identify conservation practices that align with their operations. With just a few basic inputs, the tool generates a clear report highlighting relevant habitats, recommended actions, and available support programs. It’s designed to raise awareness and encourage stewardship, without overcomplicating or disclosing sensitive species data.
